Exchange of Peace

At every Mass we celebrate, just before we receive Communion, we are invited to exchange a greeting of peace with those around us. The Church describes this ritual as a rite “by which the Church entreats peace and unity for herself and for the whole human family, and the faithful express to each other their ecclesial communion and mutual charity before communicating in the Sacrament.” This gesture is about the peace, unity, and love that we have for one another within the body of Christ and our prayer that this might be known throughout the world. This ritual is a sign of the communion that we are together, as we anticipate receiving Communion - the Body & Blood of Christ. While there are different ways in which we can exchange the greeting of peace, the Church asks that we do so warmly and sincerely, with the words “the Lord’s peace”, "the peace of Christ", "Peace""Peace be with you", to accompany the gesture. It requires a sense of our presence to one another and “it is more important that the exchange be done well with a few, rather than superficially with many.” In Canada, the customary gesture is to shake one another’s hands as we share these words of peace. In doing so it expresses physically the unity that we share through our Baptism. This Christmas, we invite you to reach out to those around you as we gather to share in the joy of the salvation that has come from God born among us.
