Marriage At Lourdes

The Marriage Ceremony:

As your special day approaches, you will be given a small booklet called “Celebrating Our Love.” This contains a selections of readings and all the various rites of the marriage ceremony. This is your sacrament and you should feel free to structure it to meet your own needs. Interfaith and Interdenominational couples are very welcome at Lourdes and you should feel free to discuss any special concerns you might have in the celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony with one of our priests.

Custom:

It is our custom here at Lourdes that no pictures of any kind be taken once the service begins. (One videographer may film from well off the side or from the back of the church.) Picture taking may take place during the procession in and out and at the signing of the register at the end of the service. We ask that no confetti or rice be thrown anywhere on the property. Thanks.

Cost:

We do not charge a fee for weddings. However, it customary for an offering to be given to the priest performing the marriage. An average offering is $150, but less or more is quite acceptable depending on the circumstances.

Dates & Times:

In the Roman Catholic tradition we do not celebrate weddings on Sundays. People usually plan for Saturdays, although week days are also possible. Again, it is a good idea to check on the availability of the church and the priest on the date you are hoping for. If you choose a Saturday, times available are at 10:30am; 1:00pm or 3:00pm.

Rehearsal:

If you wish, a rehearsal can be planned. You can book this once you have met with someone and the date of your wedding is set. We rejoice with you in your decision to be married and are delighted that you are considering celebrating you marriage here at Lourdes.

First Step:

Call our Parish Office at 416-924-6257. We will send you a Marriage Preparation Kit loaded with information to help you prepare for your wedding, as well as a questionnaire to fill out and return to us. It is wise to make plans a year in advance.

Once we receive your completed questionnaire, we will be in touch to arrange an interview with some one regarding your pre-nuptial preparation, as well availability of our priests and of the church. Please do not set any firm dates until we have been in contact with you.

What You Will Need:

  1. Baptismal Certificates
You will need to get a RECENT COPY of your baptism certificate(s) issued within 6 months of your wedding. This can be obtained by phoning, faxing or writing to the church where you were baptized and asking them to send you a copy. The sooner (within the 6 months) this is done, the better.

  2. Witnesses
We also will need the names and addresses of your 2 primary witnesses, i.e. the best man and the maid of honour. Please submit this information when you bring us your baptismal certificates.

  3. Marriage Licence
Within 3 months of the date of your marriage, you will need to go to City Hall and get a marriage licence. Please Leave this form, with its envelope at the Parish Office at least 1 month before the wedding.

  4. Just Visiting the Parish?
As the Sacrament of Marriage is meant to be celebrated in a communal context, it is customary to be married in the parish community in which you normally worship and that you are registered in. However, for a variety of pastoral or practical reasons, you may wish to be married out side of your regular parish. Lourdes is happy to welcome you, but we do ask that you include, with your initial questionnaire form, a letter from your own parish priest or parish administrator, stating that you are a parishioner and requesting that your wedding be held here at Our Lady of Lourdes.

Marriage Instruction:

Anyone wishing to be married in the Roman Catholic Church must complete some form of Marriage Preparation Instruction. There are a variety of forms available. We offer one such program here at Lourdes: it is the “Engaged Encounter”. We offer this weekend course twice a year, once in the Spring and once in the Autumn. Please register early by calling our Parish office. We can also give you information on other available programs.
