25th Sunday (Note & Bulletin)

According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, the number of refugees and displaced people has reached the highest point since World War II. In its annual report, released last June, the UNHCR reported that in 2014 there were almost 60 million refugees and internally displaced people throughout the world. That’s one in every 122 people worldwide. Not surprisingly, given recent violence and political unrest, many of these people are concentrated in the Middle East and in particular Syria and Iraq. A third of the world’s refugees come from these two countries. As well huge numbers of refugees and displaced people come from Afghanistan and African countries such as the Congo, Sudan, and Somalia. In response to the massive refugee crisis in Europe, Pope Francis recently announced that the Vatican would give temporary housing to at least two refugee families and asked that every European parish, monastery, and shrine to do the same. Pope Francis said: “Faced with the tragedy of tens of thousands of refugees fleeing war, death, and hunger, who are on their way toward life’s hope, the Gospel calls us to be near to the smallest and the abandoned.” Please keep in your prayers all those throughout our world who have been forced to leave their homeland and have been turned away from others.
