Novena Prayer to Mary, Untier of Knots:
Mother of Fair Love, your hands never cease to work for your children because they are moved by the Divine Love and Infinite Mercy that flows through your heart.   I look to you.

Filled with God’s presence during your whole life you accepted the will of the Father with complete humility and the evil one was never able to catch you in his snares.  You never cease to intercede for us with your Son for the resolution of our problems.  With infinite gentleness and patience you show me how to untangle the bundle of knots that are choking me.

You, my Mother always, by eliminating every disorder, reveal the ties – the ‘heart string’—that unite me to the Lord.  Mary, Mother to whom God has given the charge of undoing the knots in the lives of His children, I place the ribbon of my life into Your hands.  See the snarl of knots that keep me bound to sin, anxiety and hopelessness. You know just how much despair and pain they cause me.  You know how paralyzed I am by them.

No one, not even the Evil One himself can take it away from Your merciful hands.  In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone.

Loving Mother, by your powerful intercession and long fingers of Love and Grace, undo the knots in my heart and in my life, free me to love as Christ loves.

Our Lady Untier of Knots, pray for me.

As Eve was seduced by the word of an angel and so fled from God after disobeying his word, Mary in her turn was given the good news by the word of an angel, and bore God in obedience to his word. As Eve was seduced into disobedience to God, so Mary was persuaded into obedience to God; thus the Virgin Mary became the advocate of the virgin Eve.

—St Irenaeus, Against Heresies

Day 1:
Mary, the New Eve

We pray for the grace to persevere in our love of God.

Holy Mary, give me the strength to persevere in my love for God.  I pray not only that I flee to him in difficult moments, but also that I may learn to thank him for all the gifts he sends:  both those that I notice and those I can’t see. Mary, purest of virgins, untie this knot that I present to you (name it if possible)

Consider Mary, the one, who with her Son, can untie the knots of evil, for she is the Woman who gives birth to the one who crushes under his feet the head of the serpent (Gen 3.15); she can show us the heart- strings between what is human and what is divine for she is the Virgin who give birth to Immanuel, “God is with us” (Is 7.14)

Day 2:
Mary, Full of Grace

We pray for the grace of a pure heart.

O my Mother, help me to conserve a pure heart, in my love for God and my neighbor.  Help me to rid from my heart all traces of selfishness and pride.  Mary, Lady of Fair Love, untie this know that I present to you (name it if possible)

See how Mary unties the knots of our servitude by proclaiming to be a mere ‘servant of her Lord’ (Lk 1.38).  She is the one who unties the knots of enmity for she has always been the immaculate friend of God, full of grace from the moment of her conception (cf. Lk 1.28)

Day 3:
Mary, the Handmaid of the Lord

We pray for the grace trust in the Mercy of God.

Holy Mary, my Mediatrix and my Mother, teach me to trust in all that the Father is doing in me and to be grateful for the love that He continually pours into my heart.  Bless my efforts to fall in step with your Son so as to one day reach the   Kingdom of Heaven.  Mary, Lady of Good Hope, untie this knot that I present you: (name it if possible)

Mary can untie the knots of lack of trust, for she believed in the “fulfillment of what had been said on behalf of the Lord” and also the knots of death since she is the one who, through the work of the Holy Spirit, gives birth to the Son of God, the author of life.

Day 4:
Mary, Blessed Among Women

We pray for the grace of love in our hearts for the world.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, I ask you to inspire the prayers that I bring to my heavenly Father.  May his mercy be poured upon my neighbours, my loved ones and on all the world.  Mary, you see the stones scattered over my path:  untie this knot that I present to you (name it if possible)

Mary can untie the knots of sadness, since during her whole life her spirit rejoiced in the God her Saviour; the knots of self-righteousness and pride too, for she gave birth to Jesus, wrapped him in a manger, and presented him to the shepherds of Belthlehem.

Day 5:
The Faith of Mary

We pray for the grace of simplicity of heart.

Holy Mary, Mother of the Lord, teach me to love life and everything that surrounds me, with your simplicity.  Mary, generous mother, exemplary wife, help me in all that I do, that it may reflect the fullness of my love for God and for my neighbour.  Mary, Mediatrix of all graces, untie this knot that I present to you (name it if possible)

Mary, raised her voice in a song to the Most High who ‘disperses the arrogant of mind and heart but lifts up the lowly.” She can untie the knots of vanity and a spirit of domination; the knots of ambition and wealth too, for she is the one who glorifies God “who fills the hungry with good things and sends the rich away empty.”

Day 6:
Mary, Associate of Christ’s Mission

We pray for the grace to follow Christ.

O Mary who protects and brings comfort, help me to solve this tangle of problems that I have created for myself.  Teach me to love our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, above all things, so that I might follow him in his Mission in all that I say and do.  Mary, Lady of Good Counsel, untie this knot that I present to you (name if possible)

Mary can untie the knots of poverty, suffering, displacement and exile, for she was the strong woman who live them personally; the knots of doubt and uncertainty as well since, although she had not fully understood Jesus’ words that he must dedicate himself too his Father’s business, ‘kept all these things in her heart.’

Day 7:
Mary, First to Hear God’s Word and Keep It

We pray for the grace of a free and generous heart.

Beloved Virgin Mary, teach me to love the way you loved Jesus.  Teach me to give myself to him and to my brothers and sisters, in a way that is free, generous and selfless, as he loved.  Mary, most Immaculate Heart, untie this knot that I present to you (name if possible)

Mary unties the knots that work against the unity of the family, for she was both a wife and mother in her house in Nazareth; and as a wife and mother of carpenters, she can untie the knots of unemployment and idleness.

Day 8:
Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces

We pray for a spirit of openness and welcome.

Mary who unties knots, you are the faithful servant of the Lord’s interests; help me to act always in my neighbour’s interests; so that by my actions, my love of God may show.  Help me to understand that I can’t love God if I don’t love my brothers and sisters in the world.  Mary, Mother of God, untie this knot that I present to you (name it if possible)

Mary unties the knots of all who are abandoned and alone, since Jesus had all humankind in mind when he said from the cross:  “Behold your mother”’ the knots of division between Christians too, for, closely united with the Apostles and other women in prayer, she waited for the Holy Spirit promised by the risen Christ.

Day 9:
Mary, Mother of God and Our Mother

We pray for the grace to share our faith and joy in Christ.

Mary, my Mother, please untangle the snarl of my problems.  Guide me in my daily mission to be someone who can spread the Word of God.  By my daily example may I bring back to him all who have wandered far from Him or those who do not believe.  Mary, my Mother, untie this knot that I present to you (name it if possible)

Think of Mary, Queen of the Apostles, who receive from Jesus this mission that ‘whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in Heaven.”  Let us ask her to untie the knots that keep us from living joyfully, and to remind us that we should make every effort in our power to “do whatever Jesus tells us”
